Paul Nash was born in Tredegar, Monmouthshire, south Wales, in 1887. His parents were gardener William Nash and Ann Owen. At the age of eight, he moved with his family to his father's birthplace of Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. He was educated at the University College of Wales (now Aberystwyth University), and at Trinity College, Cambridge
He became a research student at the University of Bonn and travelled widely in Germany and Italy before moving to London in 1923 to take up a lectureship at the London School of Economics. After two years he was appointed an assistant lecturer at the LSE and went on to become a full professor there. In 1924 he married the artist Barbara Hepworth.
He died in London in 1944, leaving behind his wife and five children.
