He served as an officer in the French army from 1930 to 1935, and worked as a correspondent for the London Times from 1935 to 1940. In 1938, he received his first book as a birthday present from his wife, The Golden Bough. In it he found the key to understanding why people suffer and what can be done about it
He decided to write a book on the subject. This book became the first edition of THE GOLDEN BOUGH , which was published by Harcourt Brace in 1941. It went through thirty-five printings and has been translated into twenty languages.
