His first film role was opposite Marlene Dietrich in The Blue Angel (1930). Oskar Werner met Dietrich again, this time opposite Greta Garbo, in The Scarlet Empress (1934), one of her last films. Werner's most famous role was as Austrian resistance fighter Hans Habe in the World War II film The Great Escape (1963).

He is also known for his starring roles in several film versions of classic novels, which include the Oscar-winning Schindler's List (1993).
