Octave Chanute was a noted American engineer, inventor, and writer. He is best known for his role in the development of the aero-engine and also for the concept of the modern helicopter. Born in 1832 in France, he emigrated to the United States in 1848, where he joined the United States Army Corps of Engineers. In 1858, Chanute began an association with Samuel Pierpont Langley that would last until Langley's death
In 1861, Chanute became a member of the board of the Smithsonian Institution and in 1876 was elected its second secretary. He resigned from this position in 1880 and during this time contributed articles on military technology and aeronautics to its journal. He was also a member of several engineering societies and in 1873 became president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
