Lt. General Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr., U.S. Army (ret.) was born in New York City on May 31, 1934 and attended West Point where he graduated in 1956. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division in the Korean War and attended the National War College at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C

After completing his military service, he was assigned to the position of Assistant professor of military arts and sciences at West Point and taught there for seven years.
In 1966 he joined the faculty of the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia and later transferred to the European Command and NATO Headquarters in Belgium as a member of the staff of the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (SACEUR). In 1967 he became chief of staff for SACEUR's headquarters at SHAPE in Mons, Belgium, then on to Paris where he served as chief of staff for all USAFE/NATO forces deployed to Europe from 1972-76 before being promoted to lieutenant general and named Deputy Chief of Staff for Operation Control at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE). In 1974 he was selected as a member of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and instructed on intelligence issues by Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger.
In 1976 General Schwarzkopf returned to SHAPE headquarters in Brussels as Deputy Commander-in-Chief, USAEUR/USAREUR's Military Assistant to Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), a position he held until 1981 when he was named Commander-in-Chief United States Central Command (USCENTCOM). In this position he directed operations against Iraq from 1980 - 1985 during the Iran Hostage Crisis. In 1985 he returned from Europe to take charge of U.S.
Military Assistance Command Vietnam (USMACV) where he commanded nearly 200,000 troops for two years before retiring from active duty on August 1, 1988.
