Noel Castree was born in Liverpool, England on August 6, 1907. He is the son of William Castree, a cotton broker, and Mary Ann (née Price). He attended the Liverpool College of Art. After leaving art school, he met Charles Lord who introduced him to J.M
Dent & Sons, publishers of the Strand Magazine. Castree's first job at the Strand was drawing cartoons for Alfred Guillaume's "Jolly Postman". He then became an illustrator for the children's weekly storybook "Jackanory".
Castree married Audrey Winifred Hall in 1931. They had two sons, Nicholas and David Castree, who are both artists.
