Nicolas Steno (March 3, 1638 – August 25, 1686) was a Danish naturalist and geologist. He was born in Copenhagen to Lutheran parents, and became the first Danish scientist to describe fossils. His best-known work, De mineralibus Danicis Rari (On the Minerals of Denmark), was published in 1669. It contains the first description of the element tantalum, which he named "Steno." He also named several other minerals after his friends. Steno's theory of how fossils are preserved in rock is now called the Steno principle
Although he did not work with fossils himself, Steno's views were influential on later developments in geology.
