Nicolas Steno (March 3, 1638 – August 25, 1686) was a Danish naturalist and geologist. He was born in Copenhagen to Lutheran parents, and became the first Danish scientist to describe fossils. His best-known work, De mineralibus Danicis Rari (On the Minerals of Denmark), was published in 1669. It contains the first description of the element tantalum, which he named "Steno."
