Nicholas Boyd Crutchley was born in England in 1883. He moved to Canada in 1887, where he married Isabel Goodridge in 1900. They had three children, two of whom died in infancy. He became a member of the Church of England, which his wife did not attend
The family moved to Edmonton, Alberta, in 1912. He worked as a journalist for the Edmonton Bulletin and the University of Alberta student newspaper. He died in 1936 while visiting his son in Vancouver, British Columbia, after an illness of four days.
