In the early 1980s, he starred in a few small roles, including a recurring role in the TV series “De Volta Para o Futuro” (Return to the Future). In 1984, he co-starred in a short film called “Tudo Por Amor” (All for Love). That same year, he debuted on television with the soap opera “O Planeta dos Macacos” (Planet of the Apes).

Nelson also had minor roles in two other Brazilian soap operas: “Amor e Revolução” (Love and Revolution) and “Em Busca do Sentido” (In Search of Meaning). In 1989, Nelson became a household name for Brazilian audiences when his character from “Tudo Por Amor” appeared on screen for three seasons in the telenovela “Minha Vida é Uma Lenda” (My Life is a Legend). In 1990, Nelson played a lead role in another telenovela called “A Favorita” (The Favorite), which was later remade into a successful film by the same name.

The following year, Nelson began starring in an Italian-Brazilian production called “L'angelo dell'odio” (The Angel of Hate), which ran for two seasons.
