Cashman died in 1916, after a lifetime of writing. Originally from Ireland, Nellie Cashman was raised in New York City and began writing as a hobby while living there. At first, she wrote about her childhood experiences and those of other Irish immigrants. Over time, however, she began to take on larger themes.

Before long she had begun writing stories dealing with the lives of the Irish people as a whole. Her best-known work is The Lonesome Road (1895), which follows the adventures of an Irish immigrant family as they journey across the United States to their new home in Nebraska. The book was made into a movie starring Pat O'Brien as O'Donovan and Maureen O'Hara as Mary; it won several awards at film festivals around the world.
