He became a Corsican nationalist and worked with Paoli to defeat the French in 1794. This led to his exile from Corsica, but he was recalled in 1796 when the French Revolution broke out. He returned to Corsica in 1797 and became noted for his military prowess.

In 1800, he was made commander-in-chief of the French Army and participated in major battles at Marengo and Hohenlinden, where he was wounded by Austrian cannon fire. For his successes, he was made First Consul in 1802 and in 1804 conspired against the government with Louis de Narbonne in an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow it (the Hundred Days). After Napoleon's return from exile in 1815, he established himself as ruler of France through a coup d'état, but was defeated by the Seventh Coalition in 1815 at Waterloo.
