M. T. Hallgarth was born in 1929 in Morristown, New Jersey to Dr. and Mrs
Joseph Hallgarth. She graduated from Central High School in Newark, New Jersey, earned her B.A. degree at the University of Delaware (1949), and earned her M.A.
degree at Wesleyan University (1952). She earned her Ph.D. degree at the University of Wisconsin (1959).
From 1960 to 1961 she taught English composition at Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and from 1961 to 1958 she taught English composition at the University of Minnesota, Morris (now Morris-University). From 1970 until her retirement in 1987 she was an associate professor of English at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minnesota until moving to Dundas, Michigan where she spent the last several years of her life writing Children's Books and other short stories.
