Michel Eyquem de Montaigne was born in the south of France in 1533. He was educated at home by his mother until the age of 19 when he went to the University of Toulouse. After completing his studies, he took up an appointment as a soldier in the French army, serving there for three years. He then returned to Toulouse where he taught for two years before leaving for safety in Bordeaux
In that city, he read widely and wrote many essays which were collected in his Essais (Books I-IV). His monumental Essays (I-III) were published between 1580 and 1588, but it wasn't until 1603 that his collected works were published. He died in 1592.
