Three years later, he joined the revolutionary army unit and took part in the Civil War. In 1920, after graduating from high school, Sholokhov joined the faculty of Rostov University. For two years he was a professor of history and geography.

In 1923 he began to teach at Moscow University where he met his future wife, Vera Konstantinovna Piotrovskaya. In 1925 they married and had a son named Boris. Sholokhov's first book "Russian Don Quixote" ("Русский дон Курцио") was written in 1924 while he was a history professor at Moscow University. This book doesn't have any literary value but it did get Sholokhov his first recognition as a writer.

In 1925 he became a member of the board of directors at workmen's union called "NEP-Building Construction Bureau". He worked there from 1925 to 1927. The NEP-Building Construction Bureau was mostly known for its activities concerning large-scale construction projects such as: building bridges and dams in Siberia and Kazakhstan; building military bases in northern regions of Russia; and building railroads in Siberia and Central Asia. In 1927 Sholokhov quit his job at this union to be able to write full-time because he was tired with his boring work life and wanted to become a serious writer.

After this change in status Sholokhov wrote his second book "The Captive City" ("Пленный город"). This book received so much attention that it became very popular among young people during the 1930s and 1940s. It is not only about the grandiose nature of war that is taking place during that period but also about human nature and human relationships that these events bring out.
