Midhat Gazale (born in Albania, in Gjirokastër, near the Greek border, on August 5, 1940) is a writer and political activist. He was considered one of the most prominent intellectuals in the Albanian literature of the 20th century. He was an active participant in the anti-communist and anti-fascist movements and was a member of the League of Communists of Albania. He was an editor-in-chief for several publications including Zëri i Popullit ("The Voice of the People"), Shqiperia e Re ("Albania's World"), Kombi i Lartë ("The Champion"), and Shkolla Popullore ("The People's School")
In 1999, he was arrested and charged with high treason by the regime of Enver Hoxha. He spent some time in jail but was not sentenced to death. In 2000, he joined some other former political prisoners who established a political organization called "Shqiperia e Re," or "Albanians' World." The main aim of this organization is to promote peace, democracy and human rights in Albania.
