Micheline Jean Louis was born in Luanda, Angola. She studied English, Portuguese and French at the University of Luanda until 1956. Upon returning to Angola she worked as a teacher in the colonial government schools. She later worked for the Red Cross until 1965 when she returned to Paris where she attended the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (now the Sorbonne) where she received a degree in Political Science in 1969.
