Michel Leiris was born in Marseille in 1899. A distinguished member of the French Academy, he has been a founder and president of several associations and institutions. He is co-founder and honorary president of the "Gallery of the World" in Paris. At the age of twenty-eight, after his studies at the Sorbonne, he began his literary career as a journalist and essayist with his first novel, Champ Fleuri (1924), which earned him many prizes from academies and literary circles
