Michel Butor is a French film director and screenwriter. He was born in 1945 in Paris, France. Michel Butor studied history, philosophy and literature at the Sorbonne University in Paris. After writing a thesis there on Georges Bataille, he began his professional career as a journalist for the French newspaper Le Monde from 1971 to 1980
In 1980, he produced his first short film, A Love Story in which his own mother played the main role. His first feature film in 1983 was The Beaches of Agnes which he wrote and directed with Dominique Sanda. Subsequently, he wrote and directed several other films including: The Prime of Life (1990) Goodbye! (1996) and The Private Pleasures of Others (1998).
