Meriwether Lewis was one of the most successful American explorers in the early 1800s. He accompanied William Clark on his expedition to explore the Louisiana Territory in 1803. Afterward, Lewis led several expeditions in the West into present-day Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. He accumulated hundreds of sketches of objects that were later identified as part of his collection, which is housed at the Smithsonian Institution.
