Melissa Gilbert was born in Los Angeles, California, to actor-turned-director John Gilbert and his wife, the former actress Lila Lee. Melissa has two older sisters, Maureen and Susan ; younger brother, Michael. She began acting at the age of three, appearing in a few television commercials and later appearing in her father's films. In 1968 she starred as troubled teenager Ronnie Anne Cunningham on the ABC series, "The Flying Nun," playing the part until the show went off the air seven years later
In 1978 she co-starred with her father in "The Girl Who Knew Too Much," a made-for-television movie which was filmed in Britain and aired on CBS.
