Mary Tyler Moore was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 13, 1936. She graduated from Brooklyn's James Madison High School, where she was voted "Prettiest Girl." After two years at New York City's Hunter College, Moore became a production assistant at the popular television show of that time, "The Jackie Gleason Show." She built her own television writing career with the success of her first one-woman show. This led to the development of her Emmy Award-winning series "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." The program was so successful that it ran for seven seasons, won an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series twice and won the Golden Globe Award for Best TV Musical or Comedy Series twice. Mary Tyler Moore appeared as Laura Petrie on both "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Now living in Connecticut, she continues to produce new programs on PBS.
