As a child, Mary loved to read, and she bore an uncanny resemblance to her famous character, Amelia Earhart. She won a scholarship to Mount Holyoke College, where she studied philosophy. There she met Robert Austin, who would become her husband and business manager.

The pair traveled widely, living in England for two years, France for two more, and Italy for the next five years before settling in California in 1897. Mary wrote her first novel at age thirty-seven about the Underground Railroad, which served as the foundation for her best-selling book The Brooklin Ring (1911). She remained at home with their two children while Robert traveled the world with his company of performers that toured Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Mary died suddenly on June 4th 1922 after contracting pneumonia.
