Marty Strange was born March 12, 1951 in Greensboro, North Carolina to a mother who was a school teacher and a father who owned a grocery store. At 14 he began working as a newsboy at a Greensboro newspaper and continued that same role for the next six years. At the age of 21 he moved to Chicago where he became a newsboy at the Chicago Herald-American. In 1982 Marty joined parent company Globe Inc. as Director of Circulation Management after which he became Vice President of Circulation for Globe's Midwest Region. In 1986 he became a Vice President of Globe's newly formed News Service Division and attended the National Enquirer's first annual convention in 1988 which convened in his hometown Greensboro, NC.

In 1989 Marty was named Director of Circulation for Globe's East Coast Region and then transferred to Washington, D.C. in 1990 where he was named Vice President of Circulation for Globe's Central Region.
