At the age of five Martha's family moved to the great city of Birmingham, Alabama. She began writing poetry at age nine and continued to write throughout her life. She was a member of the Alabama Writers' Workshop and participated in the National Poetry Slam. Her first book, Sentimental Journey to Birmingham, was published in 1920
