Markus Wolf was born in 1948 in Berlin. He studied history at the University of Hamburg and social sciences at the Free University of Berlin. From 1968 to 1973 he worked as a radio journalist for the radio station DEFA in East Germany. However, he was arrested by Stasi police in his flat on September 25, 1973 because of his participation in the "Revolutionary Intelligentsia." He spent 16 months in various prisons, where he worked as a janitor, before being released on parole on May 29, 1974
In July 1976 he was arrested again for refusing to answer Stasi police officers' questions about his former comrades. This time he spent four months in solitary confinement. He spent the rest of his sentence working as a gardener at an old age home.
On December 15, 1987, Wolf was arrested for the third time and imprisoned for twenty-one months without trial. After being released from prison, he was placed under house arrest for three years, then under surveillance for another three years, and finally placed under permanent surveillance for life.
