Marine Le Pen is the president of the National Front ("FN"), a French political party. A member of the European Parliament, she is also a candidate in the French presidential election, 2017.
Le Pen is the daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen, co-founder of the FN in 1972. As a young woman, Marine Le Pen was politically active in the far-right National Front party founded by her father in 1972. She was active in local politics and became one of her father's closest advisers in 1988

She left the FN in 2011 to found her own political movement, the National Rally ("Rassemblement national", RN) which has been described as "neo-fascist."
Le Pen has led her party to successive electoral successes at all levels of government since 2001. In 2015 she was elected president of Alpes Maritimes, a département in southeastern France with over two million inhabitants. On 6 May 2017, she announced that she was running for president in next year's election.
Le Pen is married to Louis Aliot , leader of "The New Forces" ("Les Nouveaux", formerly known as Front National).
Louis Aliot, born in 1975, is also on trial for alleged misuse of public funds on accusations that he gave his ex-girlfriend part of his salary.
