Shank says, "and I always wanted to be a girl who did things for Daddy." Ms. Shank did many jobs to help make ends meet for her family, including housecleaning and driving a bus. She graduated from high school in 1973 at age seventeen and went on to study at UNC-Charlotte, where she received her bachelor's degree in speech communication in 1979.

Ms. Shank worked as an elementary school teacher in Charlotte, North Carolina for eleven years before earning her master's degree in speech communication from UNC-Greensboro in 1989. She is the founder and managing director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation and lives in Charlotte with her husband and two sons.
