Marie Dressler was born in 1868 in Germany. She was a well-known actress and singer who became a U.S. citizen in 1901. During the early years of her career she performed on the stage and in vaudeville, frequently performing with her husband, Otto Harbach
In 1923 she was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as a chimney sweep in The Rainmakers. After retiring from show business, Dressler took up painting and eventually became a full-time artist.
