Her first trip to America was made in 1900 when she went to New York to appear as soloist with the Johann Strauss Orchestra. While there, she received an offer to become the organist for St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City where she worked for six years before returning to Germany.

In 1914, she returned to America permanently and lived there for twenty-five years until her death on February 11, 1942 at age sixty-nine. After her death, her diaries were published as Life of a Lifetime: The Diaries of Margaret Bottome (1943).
