Bates in 1969 and has five children, three girls and two boys. Marcia started writing as a hobby at age twenty-five and published her first novel on a typewriter. Her first actual book was published by Doubleday Books in 1989 and is entitled A Mother's Testament: A Novel about a Loving Christian Couple Murdered by a Terrorist on September 11th.

The novel has been translated into Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Mexico), Swedish and Turkish. The novel has also been made into a television mini-series (1999) which aired in many countries around the world including Germany, Ireland, France and Spain. The miniseries won numerous awards including the prestigious International Emmy Award for best mini-series program in 2000.

Her next book was entitled The Promise (2001) which deals with the aftermath of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. This book was translated into German by Haus Verlag (2003) under the title "Die Erlasse" ("The Orders"). It won the German Silver Cross Award in 2004 for Excellence in Writing for Young Adults.

Her next book is titled 'The Warriors' (2004) based on the true story of the 9/11 hijackers who attacked America ten years ago today. This book has been translated into German by Haus Verlag under the title "Die Krieger" ("The Warriors"). Her latest book is entitled 'A Mother's Testament' (2005) which deals with one woman's faith through her experiences after September 11th when she lost her family members when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York City..
