Louis de Broglie was born in Paris on October 18, 1892 into a family of very modest means. He became an accomplished musician and studied at the Conservatoire National de Musique before receiving his doctorate in physics from the University of Paris in 1920. In 1935 he published his first paper on wave mechanics. He also began collaborating with Paul Dirac during this time, and they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933 for their work on quantum mechanics. In 1936 he was appointed to the chair of theoretical physics at the Collège de France.

The same year, he married Madeleine Jobard, with whom he had two daughters and two sons. De Broglie published his last paper on wave mechanics just weeks before his death on August 3, 1963 at the age of sixty-nine.
