Lionel Murphy was a New Zealand legislator and diplomat. He served as a minister of foreign affairs from 1938 to 1951, and as a minister of justice from 1952 to 1957. In 1958 he became the first New Zealand representative at the World Court of Human Rights. He was an advocate of the abolition of capital punishment and was actively involved in several international legal proceedings, including those that led to the abolition of the death penalty in some countries
