Leslie Fielder was born in Limerick, Ireland, and graduated from the University of Liverpool with an M.D. She went on to study psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital in London. In 1960, her first book, The Padded Cell, was published. In 1963 she married Sir Antony Fielder, a British politician who served as a Conservative Member of Parliament from 1964 to 1970 and was Secretary of State for Education from 1968 to 1970
In 1965 Fielder became a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. She is the author of several books, including The Development of Madness; The Concept of Psychological Trauma; The Medical Conception of Psychiatry; Stress and Human Performance; A Clinical Textbook for Psychiatrists; The Basic Problems in Psychiatry; and The Treatment of Schizophrenia.
