Laurence G. Boldt was born in Washington, D.C. in 1875 and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1894. He taught mathematics and physics at many colleges and served as Dean of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh from 1907 to 1914
In 1918 he became professor of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked until his death in 1942. He was a member of the American Statistical Association and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
