Lars Onsager was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1903. He worked as an engineer at the University of Chicago before earning his Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley in 1931. He spent many years developing theories of nonlinear dynamics, later applying them to physical systems, which led to his Nobel Prize in 1966
Onsager also worked on the structure and properties of small biological molecules, including DNA and proteins. He died in 2000.
