Landa Cope was born in the heart of the Piedmont, a region of rugged mountains and rolling hills in North Carolina. She grew up on a farm and spent her early years helping to side-dress tobacco. In 1971 she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. In addition to teaching for many years at Piedmont Junior High School, she worked as a clerk for the university library and taught adult classes in the evenings
She served as a teacher's aide at Piedmont Community College for several years, and later served on the board of PCC's Home Economics Department. Cope has been an active member of First Baptist Church in Bessemer City, North Carolina, since 1981, where she currently serves as a Trustee.
