Lakhdar Brahimi is a Lebanese diplomat who has served as United Nations Special Envoy to Afghanistan, United Nations Special Envoy to Sudan, United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, United Nations Secretary-General's Personal Envoy to Iraq, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Union of Arab Ministers of Foreign Affairs, President of the Arab League, and the UN Secretary-General's Personal Representative to Afghanistan. Born in 1943 in Beirut, he graduated from the American University of Beirut with a Bachelor's degree in political science. He received his doctorate in international relations from the University of Paris. Brahimi joined the Office of the President of Lebanon as Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs in 1974
