Klaus Fuchs was born in Berlin, Germany, on October 7, 1912. He joined the German Communist Party in 1932 and was arrested in 1938 after he gave a secret lecture at the Technische Hochschule (University of Technology) in Berlin. He was sentenced to fourteen years in prison, but was released after serving only eight months. In July 1945 he emigrated to Britain, where he became a leading figure in the Communist Party
He worked at the atomic bomb project at Harwell, England, where he had access to highly classified information on nuclear fission. Fuchs' real name was Donald Maclean.
