Kaoru Akagawa is a contemporary Japanese novelist. She was born in Osaka, Japan and received a degree in English literature from Osaka University. While studying at the university she began to write short stories and became a writer of short stories. Her first novel, ''The River of Stars'' won the Kyōyō prize for best debut novel in 1983
Thereafter she has written thirteen novels, two collections of short stories, and two children's books. In 1995, Akagawa's novel ''Tender Fingers'' was adapted into a film, directed by Kōji Wakamatsu. Akagawa's works have been translated into thirty-six languages.
