He began his career as an intern at Lazard Freres where he learned how to negotiate complex financial transactions. Jonathan went on to become President & CEO of American Express Company, Inc., one of the largest card issuers in the world where he led the Company through turbulent economic times (the first year after 9/11) resulting in record profitability. Jonathan was responsible for negotiating many complex financial transactions during his tenure at American Express, including mergers and acquisitions, equity offerings, debt financings, restructurings, and bankruptcies.

During this period he also led Amex's global travel business (which includes hotels, airlines, cruise lines) to record profitability. Jonathan held these positions until 2002 when he became Chairman & CEO of Loews Corporation where he oversaw Loews' transformation from an underperforming insurance company to an integrated hospitality & entertainment company with more than $10 billion in revenue. As CEO, Jonathan oversaw a period of significant growth for Loews including a merger with MGM Mirage and a sale to CEOC Financial Corporation where Jonathan stepped down as CEO in 2005 after a decade serving as a director on the Board & ultimately as CEO following a series of successful transactions under his leadership at CEOC Financial Corporation including its merger with CNA Financial Corporation.

In 2006 Jonathan rejoined Loews as Chairman & CEO where he continues to lead both brands today with focus on driving long-term value for shareholders through strong operational execution and strategic investment.
