Johnston McCulley was born in the Mississippi Delta, and from an early age he showed a love of writing. By the time he reached his teens, he had already published several stories and poems. In his mid-twenties, McCulley relocated to New York City, where he spent the next twenty years as a newspaper reporter. During this period, McCulley wrote a number of adventure stories for pulp magazines
He also wrote a number of best-selling books, among them The Devil's Own Work (1907), The Last Book (1912), and Jungle Tales (1912).
