John Wilmot was an English poet, playwright, and politician who was an important figure in the development of the English literary genre known as the satyr play. Wilmot was born on 12 October 1647 at Black Rod, London, the eldest son of John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester, and his first wife, Katherine (née St Albans). He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford.
