John Trowbridge was born in Manchester, England in 1664. His literary career began at the age of twenty-seven when he published an epic poem The Island of Utopia. He was a frequent contributor to the London press, publishing novels and translating works from Latin, French and Italian. In 1696 he published a treatise on gardening entitled The English Gardener's Labyrinth, which contains the famous dictum: "Plants want air just as much as we do." In 1726, while under suspicion for being a Jacobite, he fled to America and settled in Boston where he remained until his death in 1751.
