He participated in fourteen campaigns during the First World War on all sides of the conflict, including service in Cuba and on the Western Front. His reputation for military efficiency led to his appointment as commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in 1917. During this time, he was responsible for training and equipping four million soldiers while also forming an elite group of officers who would form the core of America's fighting force during World War II.

After serving as commander of both American forces and European forces during World War II, Pershing was appointed Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) at the end of the war. He retired from active service on December 15, 1948.
