John Joseph Pershing was a general in the United States Army during World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War. He is considered one of the most successful generals in American history. Born in Jessieville, Arkansas, he spent much of his early life in Missouri where he received an elementary education before enrolling at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1892. Pershing graduated fifth in his class, became an artillery officer, and served with distinction during the Spanish–American War
He participated in fourteen campaigns during the First World War on all sides of the conflict, including service in Cuba and on the Western Front. His reputation for military efficiency led to his appointment as commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in 1917. During this time, he was responsible for training and equipping four million soldiers while also forming an elite group of officers who would form the core of America's fighting force during World War II.
After serving as commander of both American forces and European forces during World War II, Pershing was appointed Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) at the end of the war. He retired from active service on December 15, 1948.
