John Howard was born in Ontario, Canada. Growing up on a farm, he developed an early interest in science and did his best to learn about and understand the world around him. His love of the outdoors and natural sciences led him to pursue a mechanical engineering degree and teach at a local high school. He was honored for his service to the community with an award from the Canadian Teachers Federation and also received many awards for his work in education, including the National Medal of Education from the United States government. It is estimated that he has reached over eight million people through his books, articles, lectures, and television appearances.
