John George Nicolay was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 17, 1818. He was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and became a lawyer. The Civil War changed his life. He served as private secretary to Abraham Lincoln from 1861 to 1865, and later wrote his life story, The Life and Public Services of Abraham Lincoln (1880)
He was United States representative to the Russian-American Conference of 1867 and was editor of The Century Magazine from 1873 to 1883. In 1876 he returned to the White House as special assistant to President Ulysses S. Grant.
He died in 1888.
