John G. Lake was born in 1848, in Oneida County, New York. He graduated from Union College in 1866, and joined the Union army in the same year. He served until 1870, when he resigned his commission to study law
He was admitted to the bar in 1872 and practiced law until 1882, when he became professor of political economy at Columbia University. In 1892 he joined the editorial staff of the New York Evening Post, remaining there until his death. Hill's most famous book, Think and Grow Rich , was first published in 1937.
