John Adrian Robinson was born in 1829 at Buckingham, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Virginia and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, from which he graduated 4th in his class in 1849. He served in the Civil War from 1863-65 as a captain of the 5th Cavalry Regiment
In 1868, he married Henrietta Maria Forman, daughter of John Forman, a prominent Philadelphia attorney. In 1875, Robinson became a member of The Century Club, a group of noted authors and business leaders who have been involved with bringing out an annual magazine for over a century.
