Johann Rudolf Wolf was a Swiss psychiatrist and author of the influential book, The Symptoms of the Mind. In it, he argued against the notion that mental diseases were caused by a supernatural agent, instead contending that they arose from a conflict of ideas or emotions. Thus, Wolf's theory of neurosis proposed that mental illnesses were a result of faulty thinking, not an evil spirit. According to his theory, neuroses were caused by excessively strong desires and beliefs that were later abandoned when the desires and beliefs became unreasonable
