He is best known for his monumental paintings of Ancient Rome and Greece, which are characterized by the use of color, light and shadow to create dramatic compositions that were meant to be viewed from afar. He is also famous for his landscapes with figures. He was elected "Pupil" at the Royal Academy in 1795 and "Academician" there in 1798.

He became a full Royal Academician in 1802. Turner's early career was difficult; he suffered from poor health, especially after a serious illness in 1799. His early works were influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, whose members formed a secret society called The Ring in 1847.

Turner was considered to be the leading member of this group for ten years until he left to join the British Army as an officer in 1805. He served throughout the Napoleonic Wars until they ended in 1815, mainly as an artist or draughtsman for the army's campaign plans. He also painted several portraits of Wellington himself during his time with the army, including several studies of Wellington's hand, which were used as models for Wellesley's glove decorations by his son Wellesley Wellington, 1st Duke of Wellington KG, PC FRS HM (1807–84).
